Pinsteps. The Chair on Rothschild Boulevard: A Throne of Stories and Sweetness
Places to visit in in Tel Aviv-Yafo Languages: he, en, ru

Amid the bustling charm of Rothschild Boulevard, a simple chair stands on a modest stage, effortlessly capturing the attention of all who pass. Tourists, drawn to its curious placement, eagerly sit upon it, snapping playful photos and joking that they’ve discovered a throne in the heart of Tel Aviv. Some pause to ponder its purpose, wondering if it carries some hidden symbolism or lofty message. But the chair offers no grand proclamations—no deeper meaning than the one you choose to give it. It simply exists, inviting each visitor to craft their own story.

This unassuming chair stirs echoes of the “Cancan” café, a lively haven where Tel Aviv’s writers and thinkers once gathered. In its day, the café was a cradle of creativity, its air filled with heated debates about art, life, and politics. The chair’s graceful style, reminiscent of Viennese elegance, mirrors that bygone era’s charm. Perhaps it was on a chair much like this one that Nathan Alterman composed his timeless verses, the poetry that wove itself into the fabric of Israeli culture.

Directly across from the chair sits “Max Brenner,” a café whose story is as rich and indulgent as its offerings. It all began with Oded Brenner, a dreamer with a passion for chocolate. After completing his military service, Brenner pursued confectionery training at the Tadmor School, part of a Ministry of Labour initiative. His journey then took him to the chocolate capitals of Europe—Austria, Germany, and Switzerland—where he perfected his craft. In 1996, he and Max Fichtman opened their first shop in Ra’anana, a small store brimming with the sweet scent of possibility.

Today, “Max Brenner” is a global brand under the Strauss Corporation, yet it remains rooted in the essence of its founders’ dream. With its inviting aroma and comforting decadence, the café offers more than just chocolate—it serves up inspiration, a reminder of the joy found in chasing a simple, sweet idea.

Together, the chair and the café create a poetic balance. One stirs the imagination, a blank slate upon which to project your thoughts. The other offers the satisfaction of indulging in life’s small pleasures. Rothschild Boulevard, with its blend of whimsy and warmth, serves as the perfect backdrop for these moments—a stage where everyday life becomes a story waiting to be told.

Rothschild Boulevard - from Habima Square to the Independence Museum

Let us begin our journey at Habima Square, a central crossroads in Tel Aviv where Rothschild Boulevard meets Sderot Hen, named after the national poet Haim Nachman Bialik. These boulevards, shaded by elegant ficus trees, are more than just scenic streets—they are the threads of a narrative that weaves through the history of Israel’s founding.

On Sderot Hen, at No. 1, a pivotal moment unfolded on May 13, 1948. Within this modest building, Arab representatives signed a formal agreement of surrender, just one day before the proclamation of Israel’s independence. A few steps away, across Rothschild Boulevard, in the home of Tel Aviv’s first mayor, Meir Dizengoff, David Ben-Gurion stood in a modest living room and declared the establishment of the State of Israel.

This short but profound route between two historic landmarks is a journey through time. It captures the essence of Tel Aviv’s transformation—from a nascent Hebrew city into the cultural and historical heart of modern Israel. Each building, each street, whispers the stories of visionaries and pivotal moments. Walking this path isn’t just about seeing the city; it’s about feeling its pulse, its spirit, and its unique place in history.
