The town was described as prosperous and populous by the Arab geographer al-Idrisi in 1154 but faced challenges from pestilence, famine, and pirate raids. When the Florentine rulers chose Athens as their residence, they established their palace on the Acropolis. They restored the Orthodox metropolis to the city, leading to a new period of intense construction.
