Ancient trading routes passed through Bahrain become more robust in the Middle ages and raises the need to defend the islands. Due to its strategic location, Arad Fort was used as a defensive fortress throughout history, from the time the Portuguese occupied Bahrain in the 16th century to the reign of Shaikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa in the 19th century.
