Pinsteps. Beit Jamal Monastery
Places to visit in in בית שמש Languages: ru, en

Beit Jamal Monastery, managed by the Salesian monks, is situated in the picturesque foothills of the Judean Mountains near Beit Shemesh. This location is a complex cultural nexus where Christian and Jewish traditions intersect. The complex includes four main buildings: the House for Salesian Monks, involved in educational activities; the Church of Saint Stephen, serving as a place for prayer and reflection; the Convent for Women of the Bethlehem Sisters of Saint Bruno; and the Monastery for Men of the same order. The visiting hours of the monastery are as follows: Morning hours from 08:30 to 11:30 and afternoon hours from 13:30 to 16:30. It is closed on Sundays and Christian holidays. A distinctive feature of the monastery is the presence of a Jewish chapel, free from Christian symbols, underscoring a commitment to interreligious dialogue. This space is equipped with a prayer podium, a menorah, and an open Torah scroll and is intended to foster good relations between Christians and Jews. Historically, the monastery is associated with the name of Rabbi Gamaliel, an ancient leader of the Sanhedrin, who played a significant role in early Christianity by advocating tolerance towards the followers of Jesus. This illustrates the deep connection of the monastery with Jewish traditions and history, alongside its Christian heritage. The name "Beit Jamal" has deep roots linked to Jewish history. It derives from the Arabic "Beit" (house) and "Jamal" (beauty or camel); however, there is a theory that this name came from the ancient Hebrew village "Kfar Gamla", which might have been associated with Rabbi Gamaliel—a renowned scholar and leader of the Sanhedrin during the Second Temple period. It is believed that this Rabbi lived in this area, which led to its naming. In ancient times, this area was a crossroads for significant trade routes, including roads connecting coastal areas with Jerusalem. This place was used for caravan crossings that transported goods between Egypt and Mesopotamia, giving it strategic importance. In light of archaeological findings and historical evidence, the area around Beit Jamal has been inhabited since ancient times, making it an important historical and cultural site that reflects the centuries-long history of the region. This place has witnessed the flourishing and decline of many civilizations and continues to be a site of artistic and spiritual synthesis in modern Israel.

Monasteries, caves, and wine. The Jerusalem Hills

Traveling along the slopes of the Jerusalem Hills is always a pleasure: here you can admire magnificent views and enjoy the route. It is very important to visit Beit Jamal before 11 AM, as after this time there will be a break during which many places close. Beit Jamal is known for its history, scenic views, and unique church. The next stop should be a visit to the stalactite cave, which is a real treat. Remember, the descent into the cave is down a slope; the path is equipped, but requires caution when descending and ascending, which could be equivalent to climbing the height of seven floors. After this, a wonderful hiking trip through the mountains awaits, where you can fully appreciate the beauty of the area. Be careful if you plan to integrate into the local environment, and do so only where it is safe and possible. Your journey also includes a visit to Tzuba Winery, known for its excellent wines and panoramic views. At the end of the day, you will visit Moni Winery, which is the perfect place to end your journey. Both wineries close at 5 PM, so time management is crucial. Moni Winery is open on Saturdays, unlike Tzuba, which is important to consider when planning your route. Remember, the time specified between locations is travel time, and you can spend as much time at each location as you deem necessary, so plan your trip accordingly. This historic journey through the unique features of the Jerusalem foothills, where each stone is steeped in history, intertwines early Christian traditions and late Judaism from the times after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple, as well as echoes of modern stories and events. You will also be enchanted by the geography and natural beauty of this region. Its unique viticultural opportunities are often compared to the richness and beauty of Italy's Tuscany for its fertility and picturesque landscapes.
