- This ancient sycamore can tell you many stories. It grows here in the city park and silently preserves the memory of the event that took place in Rishon LeZion in the first ten years of its existence. A small group of settlers decided to create a public fund in secret from the officials of Baron Rothschild. The money of the Fund had to go to buy lands. Each member of the Fund was to contribute to the fund monthly and bring at least two new members to the fund. That was the way the settlers hoped to get rid of dependence on Baron Rothschild. They called their secret fund "Keren Kaemet". The settlers managed to collect about 3 thousand francs. However, after the death of Yehuda Leiba Binstock, the keeper of the Fund, the money sank into oblivion in the Jaffa branch of the French Bank Crédit Lyonnais, because Binstock, a teacher, had no heirs. Over time, not only money was gone. So was the ancient sycamore, under the crown of which secretly gathered the founders of the fund, in the shadow of which pioneers stopped for the night, and the next morning seeing the dawn said "Rishon LeZion". That same historical sycamore was cut down. It was a monument put on its spot, and only this sycamore of the whole city park remembers its "friend" and tells its story. And the idea of the fund about the purchasing of lands has risen quite differently. In 1901, the fifth world Zionist Congress established “Keren Kaemet leIsrael", the national land fund of Israel, which was involved in the purchase of land until the establishment of the state and which manages the country's land assets to this day.
