Pinsteps. The well
  1. From the very first day of the existence of the Rishon LeZion, the settlers faced an acute shortage of water. The spring named Ayun Kara was swamped. Buying water in neighboring villages was very expensive. Delivery of water from Mikveh Israel demanded protection. After unsuccessful attempts to dig a well, when the settlers ran out of money, they sent Yosef Feinberg for help. As we already know, Baron Rothschild has allocated money for the development of the settlement and the construction of the well. It was necessary to break through the rock. Yitzhak Leib Toporovsky, a smith of the settlement, created a special steel nozzle for drilling. This process took six months, until February 23, 1883 at a depth of 48 meters, one of the diggers did not shout: "We found water!". This event is depicted in the coat of arms of the city. A steam pump delivered from Paris raised water to the surface. Water gave life to the garden and kitchen gardens, bath and water tower, city and winery. Today this well, the use of which ceased in 1977, bears the name of Joseph Feinberg. We are already familiar with his challenging fate. Remember, he had a daughter named Dora a year before his death. Shortly after her birth, the widowed Bertha Finber moved from Jaffa to Cairo. In 1923, Dora returned to Jerusalem and married Aaron Bloch. They lived in Jerusalem, then in Tel Aviv. They had three sons. On June 27, 1976 Dora went to Paris with her younger son Ilan to visit relatives and then to go to New York for the wedding of Daniel's son. The plane with Dora, 260 passengers and crew members on board was hijacked by Palestinian terrorists to Uganda. In Entebbe the terrorists released not Jews but held 83 Jewish passengers as hostages for a week in the airport building. One evening, Dora choked during the distribution of food, and was taken to the hospital. During her stay in the hospital, Israeli special forces carried out an unprecedented operation of releasing the hostages. All of them returned home. The special forces commander Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of Benjamin Netanyahu died. Dora stayed in the hospital. IDI Amin, the dictator of Uganda, ordered to kill her. Her remains were found in 1979. She was 73.

Rishon leZion. This is where it all began. This is not just an expression – this is history.

This is a special tour and a unique route. Its difference from the usual city tour is that your mobile phone is the guide. As in every excursion, it takes time to get used to the tour guide, his style, rhythm and pathways. The only difference is that in this case, you are the storyteller, you are walking yourself and set the pace for yourself - all according to your style. Just give yourself time to get used to it and you will come to life with a story full of the vicissitudes of the lives of real people, a story about their joys and sorrows, a story in which urban legends rise from the past, instill hope and simply sums up: here it all began.
