The house is usually a single-story building consisting of two log cabins connected by a breezeway or open-air hallway, called a dogtrot. The breezeway allows air to circulate through the building, making it more comfortable during hot weather. The two cabins are usually built under a single roof, with a central chimney providing heat for both cottages. One cabin is typically used as a living area, while the other is used as a sleeping area. Dogtrot houses were a popular form of housing in the rural South until the mid-20th century.
