До конца шестнадцатого века эта часть города находилась ха крепостной стеной. Здесь были ткацкие мастерские. Ткань вымачивали красили и натягивали на рамки для просушки. Рамки – Raamen по-нидерландски отсюда и происходит название. Этот квартал стал позже известен как еврейский квартал Амстердама. Все еврейское население было депортировано нацистами в лагеря смерти во время второй мировой войны. На противоположном берегу Званенбургвал стоит дом Рембрандта. На исторической открытке изображено место, на котором мы с вами стоим, запечатлённое с противоположной стороны канала.
