The name "Ypapanti" comes from the Greek word "Υπαπαντή", which means "Encounter" or "Meeting". It refers to the encounter between Jesus and Simeon the Elder in the Temple, which the Greek Orthodox Church celebrates on February 2nd as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.

The golden age of the Ypapanti Monastery was during the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was a thriving monastic community and a centre of education and culture. During this time, the monastery's church was decorated with frescoes and icons by some of the most renowned artists of the era, including Theophanes Strelitzas and Frangos Castellanos. The monastery's scriptorium also produced some important manuscripts, including a Gospel book from 1600 that is now housed in the National Library of Greece in Athens.

The monastery is built inside a natural cave surrounded by rocky terrain and forested areas. However, some areas around Meteora have sand or gravel banks, such as the Pineios River that flows through the site.

Thymios Vlachavas was a hero of the Greek Resistance during World War II. Born in Trikala in central Greece in 1914, Vlachavas was a career military officer who fought in the Greco-Italian War of 1940-1941. After the Axis powers occupied Greece, Vlachavas became involved in the Resistance, serving as a commander of the National Republican Greek League (EDES), one of the largest Resistance groups in the country.

Vlachavas was known for his courage, leadership, and tactical skill. He led successful guerrilla operations against the German and Italian occupiers, and his forces were responsible for liberating several towns and villages in central Greece. In August 1943, Vlachavas was betrayed by a fellow Resistance member and captured by the Germans. He was brutally tortured and executed in September of that year.

The name "Thymios" means "brave" or "courageous" in Greek, and Vlachavas certainly lived up to his name. He is considered a hero and a martyr of the Greek Resistance, and his memory is honoured by the people of Greece. The statue in his honour, located in the town of Trikala, depicts him holding a rifle and wearing a military uniform, symbolizing his role as a warrior for his country's freedom.

Vlachavas's contributions to Greek culture and history cannot be overstated. He played a crucial role in preserving Greece's independence and national identity with countless other Resistance fighters during immense hardship and suffering. His sacrifice and bravery continue to inspire generations of Greeks, and his legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of courage and determination in the face of adversity.
